Leaving behind the royal castle on its hill, we skirt the great Home Park full of deer, before setting off downstream towards Runnymede and the Magna Carta memorial.
We journey on past Shepperton to Hampton Court, the palace of Henry VIII, famous for its maze and lovely gardens – and now also flocks of parakeets in the trees. We shall moor at the end of the palace gardens and allow some time to explore. Then we return to Weybridge and take the 'secret' entrance to the River Wey.
This river navigation is in the care of the National Trust and is a really charming waterway, belying its closeness to London and suburbia. Having ascended the double Thames lock, we pass the elegant Coxes Mill and cruise to Pyrford, with its friendly pub. Here, amongst the leafy river scenery, we are close to the RHS gardens at Wisley.
The locks are lovely on this river, with pleasant scenery at every turn. We pass close to the ruined priory at Newark, then enjoy Papercourt lock, which is probably the prettiest on the river. The Wey winds its way through beautiful open countryside to Guildford, with its new cathedral on the hill overlooking the town.
We shall leave the butty at our Guildford mooring, and take a morning excursion out into the open countryside again, past isolated locks to arrive in Godalming. Enjoying the isolation before returning to bustling Guildford for the weekend.
